Intermediate Computing Sessions

Working with digital images (all those pictures NOT in photo albums)

Two sessions: 22 and 29 September   9am-12 noon

These sessions will cover pictures taken with digital cameras, mobile phones and tablets and will include:

            Storing and accessing images

            Viewing options (there are many!)

            Editing images (using free software)

Backing up (so the next generation can relive memories)

Printing pictures and preparing pictures for printing

Transferring images to and from devices

            Emailing images

Question time for helping with individual difficulties

Participants should bring along a USB memory stick (any capacity)

Working with Audio  (Fun sessions)

Two sessions: 6 and 13 October 9am-12 noon

Because the way we listen to music and other audio, such as audio books is changing and because the way we buy music, etc. is changing, and because the way we playback music and audio is changing, we need to be able to adapt.  These sessions will include

Storing music and audio (amazing options)

            Audio file types

            WiFi and Bluetooth systems

            Earphones and headphones

Creating digital audio files (MP3's) from CDs and LPs (yes, it is very easy to do!)

Catalogue systems for audio (free downloads)

Question time for helping with individual difficulties

Participants should bring along a USB memory stick (any capacity)

Computers and Entertainment

One session: 20 October  9am to 12 noon

As a follow-up to the previous topics, a look at how computers, tablets, smart phones and smart TVs are changing our entire view of entertainment.  We will examine:

Music Streaming

Video and Movies on-demand (subscription services such as Netflix))

Free TV and movie services

YouTube and similar

On-demand services of our regular free TV networks

Computer Hardware   (nitty-gritty stuff)

Two sessions: 27 October and 3 November  9am to 12 noon

In these sessions we will cover the main items of hardware associated with modern computers and computing devices, looking at the purchase, care and maintenance, and the appropriate use of these items.  Included will be

            Printers

            Scanners

            Speakers

            Modem-Routers

            USB storage options

            Dongles

            USB hubs

            Multi Card readers

            Wireless vs wired components

Because of equipment limitations, much of these sessions will be demonstration, however participants should be able to relate material covered to their own personal equipment.

Smart Phones and Tablets  (can't live without them!)

Two sessions:  10 and 17 November  9am to 12 noon

Because of the wide variety of makes and models of phones and tablets, it is impossible to cover all features and functions of all devices, so the plan will be to cover, as widely and generally as possible, the following areas

Differences between devices - Apple and Android systems

Device  specifications (why some cost less than $100 and others cost more than $1000)

Settings

In-built apps

Installing new apps

Keeping your device safe

Getting stuff off your device (photos, movies, etc)

Putting stuff onto your device (photos, music, etc)

What is syncing?

What is The Cloud? Should I be using it?

Mobile phone plans and how to choose the best one for you

Additional storage

Question time for helping with individual difficulties

... but wait, there is more!

A final session is planned, but the content will be negotiated with participants.  This could include:

"Office suites" - free, pay-per-month and outright purchase - features, tips and tricks.

A deeper look into some topics covered earlier

Other topics that participants may care to nominate.

The final sessions will be 24 November  9am to 12 noon
